Introduction

The APAC Authentic Inclusion Association 亞太包容創新協會 , a non-profit organization based in Taipei, Taiwan, with a primary goal to advance a culture of diverse, inclusive, and people-centric scientific and technological innovation held its first Digital Inclusion and Accessibility Leadership Summit on April 25, 2024. The topic of this summit focused on a vision for authentic inclusion. The speakers for this event had diverse backgrounds in technology, human resources, education, and retail. During the summit, speakers shared their experiences supporting diverse audiences in their verticals.

In this article, I explore the key takeaways and what you, as an individual and business, can do to incorporate inclusivity into your everyday actions.

#1: Digital Inclusion as part of product design

In today’s world of technology, the concept of inclusion has taken on a new meaning. It now involves ensuring that people from different backgrounds and needs are treated fairly and given equal opportunities to enjoy digital experiences. To achieve this, digital products need to be designed with a diverse set of considerations in mind, such as color blindness, image overlays, information organization, and alternative text that can be used with assistive technologies like VoiceOver and text-to-voice.

What can you do?

Proactively involve product designers and business stakeholders in identifying diverse user personas for your product. Identify the full spectrum of user needs, including the most challenging accessibility scenarios, to be considered at the design stage. This will ensure your product is inclusive from the very beginning.

#2: VR/ XR technologies and new evolving standards for inclusion

The emergence of the metaverse and virtual reality has introduced new types of interfaces that were not previously fully considered by accessibility standards and developers. The three-dimensional world and experience completely transform how certain best practices can be implemented. However, this also brings new challenges to how users can interact using their hands, controllers, and the required movements.

What can you do?

For developers in this space, I suggest reading the Virtual Environment Accessibility Guidelines by the University of South Carolina (https://sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/cte/teaching_resources/virtual_environments/ve_accessibility_guidelines/index.php). These guidliness provide a througough guide with rrecommended solutions. It is also recommended that testers with disabilities be included in the beta testing stages to obtain feedback on what is working well and what challenges their experience.

#3: Education on accessibility holistically

It’s not necessary to personally know someone with disabilities in order to educate yourself about accessibility. In fact, it’s important to take a holistic approach to digital inclusivity that involves understanding the needs of a diverse range of users. This includes considering the needs of those with visual, auditory, cognitive, and physical disabilities, as well as those with temporary or situational impairments. By taking the time to learn about different accessibility needs and best practices, you can ensure that your digital content is welcoming and usable for all.

What can you do?

I have added a section on recommended reading material if you are looking to expand on your understanding of accessibility. As a product manager and UI/UX designer, I would recommend considering getting the IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) as a way to showcase your professional dedication to accessibility. You can also join your local chapter on Accessibility Professional to learn how to contribute.

Conclusion

The digital landscape connects us in profound ways, but true connection hinges on inclusivity. By embracing a human-centered approach to technology, we ensure that diverse users, regardless of background or ability, can participate and thrive online.

Including accessibility from the very beginning, as discussed with user personas and diverse needs, isn’t just a box to check — it’s about creating technology that empowers everyone. Whether it’s ensuring clear navigation for users with visual impairments or fostering intuitive VR experiences for those with physical limitations, accessibility fosters innovation that benefits all.

Imagine a world where technology doesn’t create barriers, but bridges. By educating ourselves, actively seeking diverse feedback, and prioritizing accessibility as a core value, we can unlock the true potential of technology to connect and empower humanity. Now is the time to take action. Let’s create a digital future that is inclusive, welcoming, and accessible for all.
